Why Study Religion?
- A Conference on Religious Studies in Higher Education -
Illinois State University


On October 25th and 26th, 2013, the department of philosophy and the religious studies program are hosting a two day conference on religious education, addressing the following questions:

Why it is important to know about and study religion?

Who should study religion?

How should we study religion?

How should we teach religion?

Who should teach religion?



KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Mark Berkson is Chair of the Department of Religion at Hamline University in St. Paul, MN. 

Gadadhara Pandit Dasa (aka, Pandit) is a Hindu monk who regularly contributes to the Huffington Post. 

Mark Muesse is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Rhodes College in Memphis, TN.



CALL FOR PAPERS

The conference organizers invite qualified faculty members and graduate students to submit papers for presentation. Paper submissions should clearly address at least one of the five questions listed above. Papers should be no more than 4000 words and be appropriate for a 30 to 40 minute reading time. Papers should be submitted electronically as word documents to Daniel Breyer at dbreyer@ilstu.edu with the subject heading Conference Paper Submission. Submissions must be received by September 15th, 2013. 


The conference will be free and open to the public.
